James May has gone from Top Gear to Top Gin! Producing small batches of unusual gin flavours, JamesGin is created by two men in a cold shed in Wiltshire.

Using our print expertise coupled with the creative vision of their designer Viv Seeley, we helped JamesGin produce a bespoke, high-end cocktail book to feature The Taster & The Mixer of the various gin flavours.

James wanted the book to be pocket sized, to be handy for when the bottle was opened, and like the gin it needed to feel luxurious and special. James and Viv got us involved at the start of the project which enabled us to work together to spec the right paper and finish for the little book to pack a punch and be made cost effectively.

We suggested a few options but settled for a GF Smith Colorplan Pristine White with a Morocco emboss for the cover, with a singer sewn spine in orange thread to tie together (quite literally) the design. The books were finished off with the two leading corners rounded to mirror the design inside - a lovely touch but one that caused a few production headaches. However with testing, working together and lots of new blades, we found the perfect solution and achieved the matching curve.

With a job like this it’s all about the ground work and having the right expertise and knowledge to avoid any problems and overcome any unforeseen issues. Testing, proofing and dummies as well as being involved at the start of the process, are crucial in making sure we can produce what’s in the creative’s head and to meet everyone’s expectations.
